I don't think it was far off with gopher, they are all related very closely Locals all refer them as "Rocky Mountain Ground Squirrels" and I think even in some of the tourist guides for the Banff Canmore area... but also gopher, lol. When I first heard their name having freshly moved from Saskatchewan I remember thinking "that's an awefully fancy name for a gopher" lol. Come to think of it I don't think I've heard them refered to as Richardson's in the 22 years I've been around these particular ones. Personally I think they are just gophers that get better food then the ones in the praries (aka prarie dog) and hence end up fatter and slightly more colorful coats and thats my 2 bits, lol!
hahah they are cute! there was SOOOOOOO many of them on the 728 (i think) highway from canmore through spray valley and kananaskis. i counted like 20 of them just licking the gravel on the road (im assuming)
it was very weird for me.. cuz your squirrels are small and you have all these other squirrel like creatures!.. then some people call chipmunks ground squirrels! so its soo confusing!..lol
Yeah there are lots of them.... they are very big pest in the praries for cattle farmers, the cows can break their legs in the vast amount of holes they dig...
there are these, red squirrels, striped squirrels, the little striped chipmunks(who look like the striped squirrels on half the size)and even some flying squirrels that are most common in the mountains... Calgary and area also has the bigger black squirrels. and then there are all the others ones like the marmots, pikas, martins, weasles, otters, beavers, minks and pack rats (which don't really looks like rats at all) that are in the area... soo many fuzzy little rodents, lol.
Ya I saw in your iphone pics you went up the spray lakes road (never did know the number of it, lol)..... I like that road . those sheep were probably in the most common avalanche area that road has, summer or winter... they may even be the cause of some of the avalanches by knocking rocks loose, lol.
HAHHAH yah.. i noticed they were common in the "avalanche area no stopping" . its like " well i have to stop they are in my way!".. lol i did spray lakes road twice.. we did it from kananaskis on a rainy day and then i did it from canmore on a sunny day. i loved the gravel roadness of it! felt like a real secret place almost. And it will forever be the road i met my new coyote friend on

I believe it's a Richardson's Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus richardsonii).
(Pssssst! just so ya know: true Gophers have very small eyes for their head size.)
